Usually, mean implies the arithmetic mean... which is synonymous to average.
However, note that there are terms such as harmonic mean and geometric mean.
So, a person can argue with you that they are not the same! S/He has a point!
But, sometimes we become so familiar with a term, that we feel comfy in saying it in short... I mean!
