Marking my first year into Blog-o-sphere!

By the end of this month, I will enter into second year of blogging!!!
My first post started in this blog at the end of last June.

I had started it has a hobby, and as some resources for my friends back in my country. I had planned to share my experiences and also had expected that some more may come up and share theirs too. (not complaining: but I received none!)
I am glad that I have survived my first year in here!!!
I have found very nice people in this sphere and related forums elsewhere. Whenever I got into trouble, I could get some advise from my friends.
Just shout! everyone is ready to help you out!

In due time, I would like to share my steps on what I did and what a new blogger can do to promote and get into habit of writing. Meanwhile, do not forget to surf through my blog roll.

It feels nice to be loved!

Thank you all!!!

SLC aftermath

This week, along with all kind of political turmoil, we had the result publication of results for School Leaving Certificate (SLC).
SLC result is taken as one of the festival in Nepal.
The pass percentage was quite nice hovering around 64%. The highest achievement so far.
That means 1,95,689 students crossing the 'iron gate'. That is a huge new generation coming into the merciless and cruel competitive world. What we have in store for them?
NO THING!!!
This is what we give them as the bonus of their all 10 years of hard work in school.
There is no plan on how to manage such potential.
Looking into future, that number and mathematics is a great puzzle.
More people to suffer, some to make their way out!

(to be contd...)

Fixing Hibernate problems in Windows Vista System

I went into an apparent problem with my Dell INSPIRON6400.
After cleaning up my "un-necessary" files from Disk clean-up utilities, I lost the ability to hibernate the computer.
This would be a big issue for me as I need to hibernate the system for quick wrap up.
I have found a great solution online about this problem.
The details are here HOWEVER,

I am going to write a quick how-to on it.

  • Go to start menu, type command
  • Do not press enter key, just right click on it; RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR
  • type powercfg -a
  • (to see if there is hibernate option)
  • type powercfg -h
  • YOU ARE DONE!
You should be able to see that the Hibernate option is revived!!! (If not: GOD BLESS YOU!)

I must thank http://techwhimsy.com/ for writing such a nice tips.

Chiya Pasal Radiu: A place for Nepali Songs

Want to listen Nepali music? Finding Nepali music on youtube has become so easy now a days.
Just search by the key word: "Nepali pop" or Nepali music or nepali songs or I can find some songs just by typing the first few words.
Some people, however, likes the semi-pop kinda music which was very famous around 90's. (OK, OK specially our generation.)

http://www.chiyapasal.com/

This is a great place to go!

I like the way the admin has setup the site.

The speciality of this site is the modern songs /aadhunik geet haru.

West End Studios 850 West End Ave.,New York, NY 10025 in USA: a nightmare stay!

Recently, I got a bad experience of travelling.
The Hostel.com affiliated West End Studios located at 850 West End Ave.,New York, NY 10025 was my choice for a night stay during my two day trip to New York City.
The location was OK (I could use subways to commute, not so bad.) near the 102nd street on west end.
But except that everything went worst.

The room was ready 2 hrs after we got into the studio.
The elevator was bad, we had to walk all the way up.
The worst case was the fact that the receptionist was very very rude. She yelled at another customer in front of me. (The poor guy was foreign student).

Another very bad impression for me was the fact that along with too many others, we were put in room which had no AC or cooler or nothing.
I became really angry because I felt I paid to suffer. Remind you that the temperature in NYC in the whole week had stayed around 106F or so. I went and complained, the creepy receptionist was sitting in a AC and said could do nothing (sure!). Another guy tried looking into and gave us 6th floor to try (with no AC in there too!).
That was really bad.

I wish even my enemy should not stay there.
My feeling is that this one should be removed from hostelworld.com or hostels.com

Science History for Sale

A collection of historical scientific writings owned by Richard Green of Long Island, a retired physician and amateur astronomer, will be put up for sale at Christie's auction house in Manhattan. Included among the 347 lots are works by Copernicus, Darwin, Descartes, Newton, Freud and Kepler, as well as the first phone book.

Harmonia Macrocosmica, by the 17th-century Dutch-German cartographer Andreas Cellarius, is a beautiful star atlas, with double-truck hand-colored plates.

Nicolaus Copernicus's book "De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium" ("On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres"). Idea for Entrecard pricing system

The price of sites displaying Entrecard have been made to work in different algorithms. "The base of 2". This has done some interesting job: It has been able to create a huge amount of discussions among the bloggers who use EC system. I have posted my views on it elsewhere.
There have been different kind of views and ideas on how to get more out of it. I was particularly interested in the discussion in the forum initiated by Josh.
His basic idea was having multiple ad-place on the same site as we do in the case of project wonderful. Good input!
I think instead of having multiple ads on the single site; we, the bloggers, should be able to have more control ... something like to allow advertisements for 6 hours or 12 hours (or hourly basis after saturation as shown in figure) and should also be able to control the maximum ad price ...

Someday, My price went all the way up to 1024! Well, this is a small blog and I don't want my visitor/advertiser to spent a huge EC credit to advertise in here. Because, the return value (which is about 35 clicks as reported by some) may not be so nice for their hard earned EC credit.
Instead, it would have been better if there would have been provision like if the ad prices goes up, simply reduce the time of appeareance. But (however) keep the maximum price to, say, 512/1024 EC credit or so.
That means the EC ecosystem will start to behave as the price goes up (with current formula/ may be with new improved formula, as I had suggested) and eventually saturates at value the user had decided and then goes into cycle of hours if above the cap.
Every one can have chance into "big-blogs" by this idea of having short time at some fixed rate.
For example: If I have to fix price: I will let it grow till it reaches 1024 per day maximum (which is rate at the end of first 10 days) . And then 1024 for 18 hours, 12, 10,8,6,2 and 1 hour. After that there can be option such as display on the 18th day 10 times at random; 19th day 4 times at random ... or slot pack!!! No one should be made to pay some weird 131072ec/day EC.
I know that it becomes ugly as we try to drag it down the road and coding simply kills.

Bottom line: Blog-o-sphere is not the ecosystem in which someone sits at the apex of the pyramid.
EC system gives chance to all for exposure, but-however, new system kinda forbids newbies and thus needs a revision.

What do you think?

Keep the paper money: Just in Case

Keep the paper money: Just in Case!!!

I was in New York city this week.
As always, I have been a proud user of electronic money. "Use Card!" Even, I do order check for my landlord by internet check. No need to write Physical Check. Just schedule and send! Save paper!
NOT ALWAYS!
I was in 43rd street, the times square. Trying to purchase the One-day pass for the subway line. The machine did not work with my card. I asked for help thru' the service, the guy replied "get it from the machine!!".
I was in trouble because 20 Dollar bill was "too big for the machine". Moreover, I had no exact change as demanded by the Machine. The card was not being picked up.
Somebody was kind enough to suggest me to go to 42nd street and seek help with the people/agent in booth in there. The guy in the booth was really helpful and gave me change. After my first purchase, I noticed that the card system started to work again!
It must have been a temporary black-out. But that was enough to create a panic.

The lession of the day:
Keep the sufficient paper money whenever you travel, Just in case.

Creepy Joke: Posted!

This one is forwarded joke.
I think I am punishing my blog by pushing it.
Let's see!

Year: 2107 BS (2050 AD) Place: Microsoft Company, USA (Two Americans (Microsoft Top Level Employees) Talking) :: Alex & John

Alex: Hi John, you didn't came yesterday to office?

John: Yeah, I was in Nepalese Embassy for stamping.

Alex: Oh really, what happened, I heard that nowadays it has become very strict.

John: Yeah, but I managed to get it.

Alex: How long it took to get it stamped?

John: Oh, it was nasty man, long queue. Bill Gates was standing in front of me and they played with him like anything. That's why it got delayed. I went there at 8 AM itself and waited and returned by 5 PM .

Alex: Really? In NEPAL , it is a matter of an hour to get stamped for USA

John: Yeah, but that is because who in NEPAL will be interested in coming to USA man, their economy has been booming.

Alex: So, when are you leaving?

John: Anytime, after receiving my tickets from the client in NEPAL and you know, I will be getting a chance to fly in Nepal Airlines (NA). Sort of dream come true. Alex: How long are you going to stay in NEPAL?

John: What do you mean by how long? I will be settled in NEPAL , my company has promised me that they will process my Everest Card (like green card in USA) Alex: Really, lucky person man, it is very difficult to get a Everest Card.

John: Yeah, that's why, I am planning to marry a Nepali girl there.

Alex: But you can find lots of US girls in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Biratnagar, Butwal etc.

John: But, I prefer Nepali girls because they are beautiful and cultured.

Alex: Where did you get the offer?

John: In Butwal, salary is good there, but cost of living is quite high, it is NRs. 2500/- for a single room accommodation.

Alex: I see, that's too much for US people, NRs. 1 = US$ 109.64 Oh God! What about in Kathmandu?

John: No idea, but it may be much higher then this...

Alex: I heard, almost all the Nepalese are having one personal Robot for help.

John: You can get a BMW car for NRs. 5000/-, and a personal Robot for less than NRs.7500/-. But my dream is to purchase Ambassador, which costs NRs.2 ,00,000/- but has got a lovely design.

Alex: By the way, who is your client?

John: 'Ambition Everest', a pure Nepalese company, specialising in Embedded Software with AI.

Alex: Oh, really, lucky to work in a pure Nepalese company. They are really intelligent and unlike American Bodyshoppers who have opened their Fly-by-night outfits in Nepal. There you have full freedom and no restrictions. You can do whatever you want! I wonder how that state has perfected that system.

John: Yeah man!, you are right. I hope our America also follows their footsteps.

Alex: How are you going to cope with their language?

John: Why not? From my school days I have been learning Nepali as my first language here at New York . At the Consulate they tested my proficiency in Nepali and were quite impressed by my cent per cent score in TONIL i.e. Test of Nepali as International Language.

Alex: So, you are going to have fun there.

John: Yeah, I will be travelling in the world's fastest train, world's long underground way...

Alex: You know, the Nepalese President is scheduled to visit US next year, he may then relax the number of visas.

John: That's true. Last month, The Nepalese Foreign Minister visited White House and donated Rs. 100,000/- for infrastructure development and he sugggested to follow model used in NEPAL. Bill Gates also got a chance of meeting him. Very lucky person.

Alex: OK, Good Luck John. John: Same to you Alex. And don't go to Consulate in a "Daura Suruwal" because they will think you are too Nepalised and may doubt you will never come back and hence your Non-Immigrant Visa may get rejected. But don't forget to say " Namaste, Sanchai hunuhunchha ??" to the Visa officer. It seems he likes that and will not give you a visa if you don't greet him that way.

An idea: Gmail conversation updates

I was reading thru' my inbox in Gmail. The gmail Notifier popped up!
I was in the middle of reading my mail, after finishing it up; I wanted to get into the new mail. As you know gmail has a feature which can update the recent inbox messages of the same category. Just by clicking "update conversation".
I was thinking of the similar idea.
What if gmail could add a line of code which will automatically update the status from
into ...

because whenever one receives the message, the current one will become the second in the inbox.Updating the number will facilitate to read new mails without having to go into inbox again and seek out the new messages.

Google Lab: Gmail Lab offers experiments for you

Can you imagine having a sneak into the google lab? Particulary, on what's going on and what are the new developments?
The lab and their outputs are no longer such top secrets.

Google has launched a new feature called Gmail Lab, enabling you a direct access to what they have been thinking.
Try some!
I am trying mouse gesture and the Break ones!

Look at the top-right corner!

Moreover:
If (when) a Labs feature breaks, and you're having trouble getting into your account, there's an escape hatch -- just go to http://mail.google.com/mail/?labs=0 and Labs will be temporarily disabled.

Update:
I pasted escape code and got all my features turned off; I looked into the code and thought that zero and one must be the compliments and did put this code:
http://mail.google.com/mail/?labs=1#inbox
to find that it worked back!!!
(Great!! . . . now I am smiling with o/1 logic: they have already thought about that!)

E-mail Requests for Passwords: Real or Fake?

I have a blog about all kind of SPAMs which make thru' my inbox spam filter.

Recently, I received an Email sent by the University Information Technology Services. Which I am going to put forth, as it may be informative for college students in USA or elsewhere.

Message follows:
***************************

Not quite sure if that request to "send your password or risk losing
your account" is real or fake?

Now you can compare that (phony) request with a number of phishing
samples that have been analyzed and dissected to help you identify the
characteristics of fraudulent e-mails.

I've taken a range of false messages received by University students and
staff over the past six months and created a series of web pages that
can help you understand how phishers work and how to spot them.

The samples can be found here:
http://www.albany.edu/its/security_threats_phishing_samples.htm

As always, no University employee will ask you, in any format, to
divulge your campus passwords. Passwords should always be kept
confidential and never shared with anyone. Please feel free to forward
any messages to me if you are in doubt, or would like to alert me to
their campus distribution.
