CookBook Approach to Applying to US Universities

This is the second version of whatever I wrote in here: (intended for Physics students of Nepal// but can be generalized)

Trying to apply and to have an idea of how it is to apply to US Universities to pursue higher degree is really great challenge.

There are various factors influencing the quest for it. If the motivation is not killed by the pertaining situations, one can take the journey of searching Universities as a challenge. Moreover, it is rewarding.

OK OK, to the point:

  • What to do?
  • Where to search?
  • What do I need?
  • When/Where to apply?
  • ?

Do:

  • Get a nice notebook and pen, this is your first expense towards the process J
  • Get attested the Photocopies of Transcripts of BSc and MSc from Jamal (or Balkhu ?). They take 20 Rs. Per page : Transcripts x 2 +Original/Provisional x 2 = 80 Rs per envelop. (you can keep track of expenses if you want)
  • Get the (3 - 5) Recommendations from Professors and or Institutions (??).
  • Do you have TOEFL Score? What about GRE???
  • Get a good internet connection// Going to cyber will not make it, as it has a lot of distracting points.
  • Make a spreadsheet: The fields are … Name of the University(Department) || State || Website || Email of Graduate Chair/Admission || Application Deadline || etc .. (for more info)
  • Target at least 20 Departments
  • Make up mind to get info of 2/3 department per day. And keep track of whatever u r doin.
  • Email them, asking for info. They are so kind that they will contact you // sent you forms with the checklist and all kind of info.
  • To Apply: Make another Spreadsheet : … This is for correspondence checklist… For each Department note the following: The Application form || Recommendations (Recommender 1 + Recommender 2 + Recommender 3+?) || Statement of Purpose (short term and long term goals “?” ) / Personal Statement || Certified Documents || Resume/CV || TOEFL and or GRE scores … ||? else… ||Mark Tick in each box whenever done and start putting in Envelop.

Important: Send the documents to the Department, unless otherwise they are really strict about it. This will save the application fee to be paid to the admission office. Some of them simply will not waive the application fees while some of them do not.

The most important thing is COMMUNICATE!!!

Search:

Google will be our best friend !

By the end of the day, you will feel more smart and expert than me.

Please write me, what to do.

That means

;)

By this time you must have figured out the best time to apply.

Do not do later than 15th of December, if you want to come in fall semester (august). Some may also have earlier deadline. However, I have no idea of deadline for Spring semester (coming in Dec/Jan).

BEST OF LUCK!!!.

Singers on/From Youtube

Singers on/From Youtube.

Youtube, which has been regarded as one of the web2.0 candidate has served as a place for nice people to hang around. Though, we must agree on the noise level present in it.
The basic aim of making people capable of uploading videos has taken a new form. People sing and dance on youtube.
I have been impressed with many of the "new" artists.

Some of impressive ones.
Please suggest some more.

Google Sites: Now Open For Everyone

Do you remember the days in which you were glad to have a free and 5MB space provided kindly by the geocities.com with data transfer limit? Moreover, you never used to mind the ads inserted by yahoo! into your page; and yet you get no advantage except the "free" space!
Time has moved forward. Now there are too many services available online. Apparently free!

Latest One in the row happens to be the Google Sites. Now it is free and open to public.
sites.google.com/
Have you tried it?

Well, I have not much spent my time over the new toy! I can still publish my documents and get the link sent to friends using google documents.
Already present is the pages.google.com

Lets see what it has to offer.

Power Law in Nepali Politics?

Finally, Nepal is declared Republic.
I was browsing through the news and trying to extrapolate the future trends, By eyeball it looks like the famous power law is slightly followed in the vote trend.
The outliers in this graph seem to be the CPNUML. I think; the fact that they were also wearing the same kind of skin like Maoist and to check and balance them (as votes suggest), people have put them in the outliers. Otherwise, it looks like the CPNUML should have gotten vote around 1 million only!!!
Meanwhile let me see the coefficients...

Entrecard Race: Reloaded

My EC account was deleted by support in the afternoon of May 20th 2008. So, I am starting from zero again (with their ?step my 400 pending ads, ~81 running ads and ~300 EC credits are doomed).
:(
Good news:
The EC price for advertising in here is very low: Please advertise!!! (used to be 512).
Update: Thanks for the supports.

Bad news:
I was at the third/fourth place in the system under biggest advertiser with popularity index of about 800.
I need to work and drop (300) for quite a bit of time to
re-gain the position.
:(

Please add me to your favourite in EC system!

I will appreciate it!

Thanks!

Yahoo on project wonderful

Heard about project wonderful?

This line should make everything clear:
"{Project Wonderful reinvents online advertising. We've made click fraud impossible. We give advertisers the power to choose what sites their ads appear on - and publishers the freedom to choose what ads show up on their sites. We don't have absurdly high minimum-payout levels. We've made the entire online advertising experience transparent, trustworthy, and fair - as well as more profitable, for everyone involved! It's why our slogan is "Everybody wins." }"

I was just hoppin on my own site and was amazed to see the yahoo messenger ad.
Why?
Because:
  1. It is one of my favourite messenger
  2. It is putting the bid at 0.00!
... Means yahoo team is working on project wonderful things to place ads on my blog and with no money?

Hey Yahoo Guys!
This is certainly not good sign. As I was wondering of applying to yahoo publisher network.
But I think, I should not!!!

For my favourite Yahoo messenger download ...

Live Search CashBack program: Not impressed!!!

I was reading through Mashable and came across the Live Search CashBack program.

Simply put in attractive word:

"Microsoft will pay you for using their search Engine".

Sounds attractive, Doesn't it?

Not to the real case scenario.

Read the details on how to use it here from the horse's mouth.

I think one can already find the online deals over the internet and gain more Dollar than they are paying in cents. Since it is based upon cost-per-acquisition, which means that the advertiser pays only when a customer clicks on the ad and actually completes a purchase; not cpc it is not going to pay you well.

What do you think?

Creativity

Awesome Music Created on Guitar!!!

I remember trying to learn the guitar. That was a great pain. The tips of the finger got into terrible shape and I had no enough time to practice the chords.
I am always fascinated by such plays of music, but must confess that playing music is not as easy as concentrating on something. May be I need more time for those activities (which is not available for these years). Similarly, I love art: paintings...
Let me stop before the list goes too long!!!

My Blog Log Tweaks: No Spam please !

My Blog Log has added new updates and features. This is good. Actually, this looks more pretty and sleeker than the previous version(s). The down side on this, as I am coming across is the fact that I have received 52 messages in 2 days. On the first day, I thought that I would enjoy the updates via email. But it occurred that I am getting up to five messages of the same kind. No way!!! I do not need that much updates in MBL!!!
I can disable all the messages but that sounds not impressive. Temporarily, I have applied filter, but yahoomail filter limit is max 15.
The email update service in Blogcatalog is better, I think!

Useful Firefox Add-ons: Taboo

For the Firefox users:
Found an interesting page but want to read the page afterwards, because you are busy right now?
I came across the add-on: Taboo.

This is specially useful because you do not want to keep in to delicious and also do not want to bookmark it. Well, taboo is a kind of bookmark.
Bookmark for temporary use with visual preview.
I have put my regular pages I visit on Taboo preview and is really useful + easily accessible.

The description provided by them:
If you keep tons of tabs open because you want to continue reading them later, Taboo is for you. Taboo lets you save a page for later (taking a screenshot, and using the Session Saver code to remember scroll location and form fields).

Taboo lets you save a tab for later. It takes a snapshot of the web page, including session state information (such as how far you've scrolled on the page and information in forms).

Later you can reload the tab by searching/browsing through all your saved tabs. A single click and you're back to the same place in the article.

Searching through saved tabs (url/page title) and a tooltip with a larger screenshot of the page help you find the tab you are looking for.

Leaks in Gmail Spam Filters?

Recently, I have been receiving a lot of spamy emails into the Gmail inbox.
The emails include the "trusted" domains such as "yahoo.co.uk", "yahoo.co.in", some kind of singapore domain, and a lot of hotmail domains.

I have been posting the leaked messages into a blog:BAD SPAM
However they do have some characters of spams: All CAPITAL subject lines. Same kind of start line etc. etc.

One of the reason why I shifted to gmail was the fact that Gmail spam filter used to be (may be is still) strong and very intelligent.

However, in the case of spam, false positive is very expensive.
So, I need to label them manually.
That means the spam filter still has to learn a lot and the leakage will pertain for some more time.

Which type is your blog?

How to classify my blog into Blog Categories???
The available options are:
* Academics
* Activism
* Art & Artists
* Arts & Entertainment
* Autos
* Beliefs & Causes
* Blog Resources
* Blogging
* Business
* Career & Jobs
* Celebrity
* Coaching

and much more than the listed above.

Each category has huge perspective which can be/to be addressed. I have written a little bit of everything. Because, My writing is kinda random: not sticky to particular topics. It is hard for me to write on some specific topic.

The problem is that, this is my personal writing/hobby place. However, I keep writing more about internet, unknowingly. The best thing is that I have been making a lot of friends thru it.

A Giant leap for Nepali Photo Journalism

Want to see some pictures of Nepal during the land-mark transition?

All of them are Really Great!!!.

The picture showing the power of people to defy the "strict" curfew is described as:
PEOPLE POWER: Students, poets, professors led by Krishna Khanal stage a sit-in at Kiritpur in April 2006 as the People's Movement reached its climax. Armoured personnel carriers and riot police were stopped by this massive demonstration of people power.
Khanal led a moral victory for non-violence and showed the continued relevance of Gandhian opposition.

A must see!!!
Get it here:
http://www.himalkhabar.com/download/photojournal08.pdf

Description provided by HimalKhabar:
For the past decade, Himalmedia publications Himal Khabarpatrika and Nepali Times, have been following national events and analysing them. In thisPhotojournal we have tried to step back and look at the past two years in perspective. Photographs tell the unblemished truth, and they provide us a glimpse of the extraordinary times that our nation has lived throughsince April 2006.

May 29: the International Mount Everest Day

May 29 is the International Mount Everest Day.

Recently, the government of Nepal has announced to celebrate May 29 as the International Mount Everest Day from this year.

This is to commemorate the first ascension of the peak in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa. The day also marks the memory of the first conquerors.

Although Nepal is a small country, it has got amazing and beautiful places in there.
Many people do not know that (Siddhartha) Gautam Buddha was born in Nepal. Some are simply ignorant.

A Milestone in Nepali Science: National Science Mapping

When I was the President of Students' Association of Physics (SAP) in the Central Department of Physics, Tribhuvan University (TU); Professor Mishra had suggested me to work on to collect the data of Nepali Physicists living aboard and in the country.

I believe that motivation led me to establish the Google Group of Nepal Physical Society.
It has been doing good, so far and has a lot of chances for betterment of Physics and Physics Education in Nepal.

I will be writing more about it.

Today I received the announcement of National Science Mapping :

http://www.planeta-observatory.gov.np/science.mapping.php?

The announcement follows:

Government of Nepal
Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology
B.P. Koirala Memorial Planetarium, Observatory and Science Museum Development Board
Singhadurbar, Kathmandu, Nepal

National Science Mapping The number of Nepali people working in the field of science and technology is growing rapidly and they are scattered all over the world. It is very important to know about these scientists/technologists/researchers and their works/fields. These researchers also deserve to have their work disseminated worldwide and be duly recognized by the nation. Their endeavour must be a source of encouragement for the new generation. It is hoped that this will benefit the whole scientific community, encourage collaboration and interaction among the scientists of Nepal and the world.

So, an attempt at science mapping is being undertaken to prepare a consolidated source of information about Nepali researchers (M. Sc. and above in pure science and Bachelor's degree and above in technical fields). National mapping of science studies is to initiate the mapping the Nepalese efforts in science through an analysis of Nepalese contributions to scientific literatures in broad subject areas of physical, chemical, life, agricultural, medical, engineering and industrial sectors. Its main objectives are

i. Development of national information services
ii. Development of indigenous information products and sources
iii. Promotion of R & D information in S & T.
iv. Promotion of institutional cooperation in information

By this study we will have an overall idea on :
i. Number of scientific contribution and scientists
ii. Number of research areas in Nepal
iii. The largest number of paper published
iv. Institution-wise contribution
v. Journal-wise contribution

We would appreciate if you kindly help us by providing the information about yourself and your works. For your convenience and to be specific, a form has been attached herewith. You are free to provide any other relevant details.

To publish this in time, the information obtained by mid June 2008 will be possible to include in this edition.

Thanking you in advance for your kind cooperation.

Blog Upp!!!

Wanna promote your blog effortlessly?
Try BlogUpp!

I have just started it, so I can not tell much about its potentiality. However, it looks promising.

Now I have BlogRush, The Good Blogs, 125linkexchange, sitehoppin and the Entrecard system for my blog promotion. I will be updating the traffics from these systems in very near future.

Effortless bonus:
The team responds on one of the comment as: One of the ideas behind BlogUpp! is "place it and forget about it; all the rest to get you traffic is done automatically". Just put the code and forget it. No need to register and follow up.

For every 10 readers of your blog, it gets visibility on other blogs to 9 readers.
The one impression out of 10 is reserved for displaying blogs which obtained additional impressions.

Here are some lines from the Blogupp:

What makes BlogUpp! different?

  • No signup. No email and privacy exposure
  • No ad submission and no efforts
  • No animation and annoying ads
  • Multilanguage support
  • Cheat-proof and fair sharing
  • WordPress platform and alike friendly
  • Targeted readers reach
  • Welcome bonus for everyone
  • Best de facto exchange ratio (10:9) and more
How it works?
  • BlogUpp! snapshots your blog and reads your RSS regularly
  • Blog's thumbnail shows on other blogs with our service activated
  • The thumbnail is accompanied by your blog's most recent article
  • For every 10 readers of your blog, it is shown to 9 readers on other blogs
  • An identical widget projects on your weblog (as shown on the right), with relevant blogs and articles (move the mouse over the widget)
  • Each link clicked in the widget opens a new window, not closing your blog
  • And all this is completely free and with no effort whatsoever

Interim Posts

I was little silly in realizing that I had to put interim post in between the IZEA related posts.
The minimum word requirements are not so hard.
Since this is my little blog, I can come up with an idea to write up and (Unfortunately) will be buried in between giant posts.
For the length of the posts I use the site: http://www.javascriptkit.com/script/script2/countwords.shtml

This one is nice site for the fact that it counts the words and has no too many annoying ads.

Try that!

PPP says: Your Post Has Been Auto Approved!!!

A good news for me!

PPP has set me as a standard postie.

In the auto approved message it says that due to my previous "high-quality" contents, my posts have been set to be auto approved. However, I may be hooked at anytime if I try to screw it up.

I looked into my real rank and it shows quite fluctuations in it. While google page rank has stayed the same during their latest update.
Specially during Jan. 2008, it went all the way down to hit the bottom rock!!!
Now it is hovering above 1K.
Not so bad!

The message says:

****************
Hello ***,

Congratulations!! Your PayPerPost post, "************", has been automatically approved based on your high quality performance as a PPP Postie!

Please note: We will still do a manual check of posts against the opportunity and PPP criteria as a verification of this approval. Should your post not meet requirements, you may get a rejection notice at a later date.

Final payment is dependent upon your post meeting all criteria set both in the advertiser's opportunity, and in the PPP ToS. If your post is rejected during manual review, and you are not able to update and resubmit, payment will not be made on this post.

Congrats again on being an outstanding PPP Postie!! And watch for more auto approvals!!

What would u do if u knew that you were never going to fail?

What would u do if u knew that you were never going to fail?

Well, this interesting question came up to my mind! I asked myself and my mind was filled up with the white noise. The overwhelming energy of successes can not be imagined.

We learn by failures, not successes!!! It is the fear of being failure which keeps us on toe.

What do you think???

Funny Ten tips!

1. If time doesn't wait for you, don't worry!
Just remove the damn battery from the clock and Enjoy life!

2. Expecting the world to treat u fairly coz u r a good person is like
expecting the lion not to attack u coz u r a vegetarian. Think about
it.

3. Don't walk as if you rule the world, walk as if you don't care who
rules the world!
That's called Attitude...! Keep on rocking!

4. Every lady hopes that her daughter will marry a better man than she
did and is convinced that her son will never find a wife as good as
his father did!!!

5. He was a good man. He never smoked, drank & had no affair. When he
died, the insurance company refused the claim. They said, he who
never lived, cannot die!

6. A man threw his wife in a pond of Crocodiles?
He's now being harassed by the Animal Rights Activists for being cruel
to the Crocodiles!

7. So many options for suicide:
Poison, sleeping pills, hanging,
jumping from a building, lying on train tracks, but we chose Marriage,
slow & sure!

8. Only 20 percent boys have brains, rest have girlfriends!

9. All desirable things in life are either illegal, banned, expensive
or married to someone else!

10. 10% of road accidents are due to drunken driving.
Which makes it a logical statement that 90% of accidents are due to
driving without drinking!

Finding Rooms in Albany

This has been pretty hectic experience for me to find a nice apartment in Albany.
The factors behind rooms that I pose also increase the troubles.

The downtown area in Albany is not so favorable.
One: It is down there.
Two: The traffic and noise
Three: The distance from the campus.

People do live there. But not too many students.
Mid-town has become little scary now-a-days as recently there have been criminal attempts; though no-one was harmed.

I want to live uptown!
Not quite, right!!!

Travel Checklist -- This check list is designed for international students in F or J status who are traveling within the United States or abroad.

Travel Checklist -- This check list is designed for international students in F or J status who are traveling within the United States or abroad.

___SEVIS I-20 OR DS-2019
Check the travel signature on your SEVIS I-20 or DS-2019. You must have your SEVIS I-20 or DS-2019 with you when you travel, even for travel within the United States. Be sure that your current I-20 or DS-2019 has an authorizing signature for travel that will be less than one year old from the date you will return to Albany. If your travel plans include a trip to Canada, the signature must be less than six months old from the date you will return to Albany. Note: You should travel using your most recently issued I-20 or DS-2019. However, be sure to save all of your previously issued I-20s or DS-2019s, as they represent immigration “history” in the United States.

___PASSPORT
Check the expiration date of your passport. You must have your passport with you for all travel, including travel within the United States. If traveling abroad, your passport MUST be valid at least six months into the future upon your return to the United States. Passports may be renewed at your country's embassy or consulate in the United States. If you have access to the world wide web, you can obtain up-to-date information on passport renewal. Point your web browser to: http://www.state.gov/s/cpr/rls/dpl/32122.htm

___U.S. VISA
Check your U.S. visa stamp inside your passport. Has your visa stamp expired? If it is still valid, is it for multiple entry, or has the entry been used up? Finally, is the category for which the visa was issued the status you currently hold (for example, if your visa is F-2, are you currently in F-2 status or did that status change after you entered the United States). An expired U.S. visa need only be renewed if you will be traveling outside the United States. The exception is travel to Canada or Mexico or adjacent islands of North America (except Cuba). Provided that your travel to those countries is for less than thirty days and you are not applying for a U.S. visa there, you may return to the United States on an expired F or J visa. There is a special rule for citizens of Iran, Syria, Sudan, North Korea, or Cuba currently in the United States. Such individuals can only enter Canada or Mexico and return to the United States IF they have an unexpired multiple-entry U.S. visa in the passport for their current status.

___VISAS FOR OTHER COUNTRIES
Check your travel itinerary. If you are traveling to a country that is not your country of citizenship, find out if you need an entry visa to visit that country. The following web link will take you to a listing of all foreign embassies in the United States and their individual web sites: http://www.state.gov/s/cpr/rls/dpl/32122.htm From there, you can link to visa information for any country you may visit. If you are “transiting” into that country, meaning that your flight home requires an intermediate stop in a third country, find out if a transit visa is required, and if so, if it needs to be obtained in advance. This is most common for students with flights stopping in the United Kingdom. For information on the requirements for “Visitor in Transit” visas in the UK, visit the following web link:
http://www.britainusa.com/visas/visas.asp

___I-94 ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE CARD
You must have your white, I-94 card with you for all travel, even travel within the United States. You will need to surrender your I-94 card if you are departing from the United States. You will be issued a new I-94 card upon your re-entry to the United States with a new admission number. However, your SEVIS ID number (printed at the top right of your SEVIS I-20 or DS-2019) will not change. SPECIAL NOTE: F-1 and J-1 students with expired U.S. visas who are traveling to Canada, Mexico or adjacent islands of North America (other than Cuba) for up to 30 days, are not applying for a new U.S. visa, AND who will be resuming their studies upon their return should NEVER surrender their I-94 card. Canadian or Mexican nationals returning to their home country should surrender their I-94 card as they enter their country, and obtain a new I-94 card the next time they enter the United States. Canadian nationals should be sure to carry with them their financial documentation that verifies the information on their I-20 when getting ready to return to the United States.

___HEALTH INSURANCE ID CARD
Have you picked up your health insurance ID card? Unless you are a graduate student with funding, you have health insurance through the SUNY international student health insurance program. Your current policy is valid through August 14, 2008. You will need your ID card if you need to visit a health care provider for an illness or accident, either locally or away. ___ STUDENTS ON OPTIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING
If you have completed your studies and have applied for Practical Training, you may travel outside the United States while the OPT application is pending, provided that you can present the USCIS Processing Center Receipt, proving that the OPT application has been filed, as well as the SEVIS I-20 endorsed for optional practical training. The signature on page 3 of the OPT I-20 must be less than six months old. However, once the Employment Authorization Document (EAD card) for OPT is issued to you, and you decide to travel abroad, you can only re-enter the United States to resume employment. Thus, you must carry with you written documentation from the employer verifying your employment or job offer, as well as the EAD card. DHS has clarified that the F-1 student does not need to have begun actual employment before leaving, as long as the student has a job offer to which to return.

___SPECIAL REGISTRATION APPLICANTS
If you were required to go through the NSEERS special registration process either at a U.S. port of entry or as part of a “call-in” registration at a district USCIS office, because you are male and from one of the 25 designated countries, or a citizen of either gender from Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Sudan or Syria there is a special exit procedure that you must follow before you can depart the United States, at the airport where your overseas flight will depart.. Failure to do so can result in your being permanently barred from entering the United States. For a description of the requirement, and a list of designated exit ports and specific information on their locations and hours of operation, go to:

___CARRYING U.S. OR FOREIGN CURRENCY

Sometimes, a student carries a large amount of money into or out of the United States. Please remember that it is a federal law that anyone carrying more than $10,000 in a monetary instrument of any form must declare that money, or risk having it seized by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials. Here is the explanation of the law:

"There is no limit on the total amount of monetary instruments that may be brought into or taken out of the United States, nor is it illegal to do so. However, if you transport or cause to be transported (including by mail or other means) more than $10,000 in negotiable monetary instruments on any occasion into or out of the United States or if you receive more than $10,000, you must file a Report of International Transportation of International Currency or Monetary Instruments (FinCen105) with U.S. Customs and Border Protection denoted in the Currency and Foreign Transactions Reporting Act, 31 U.S.C. 1101, et. seq. Failure to comply can result in civil and criminal penalties, including seizure of the currency or monetary instruments. Monetary instruments include U.S. or foreign coin, currency, travelers' checks, money orders, and negotiable instruments or investment securities in bearer form."

In past years, there have been students carrying large sums of money whose funds have been seized for failure to declare. Do not let this happen to you.
