Tagging and Indexing
Its the tag.
Another way for google is to learn from the clicks that when many people click or prefer the particular image with name DSC13434, (say) then it can be inferred that the picture must have some kind of coincidence with the key word.
The problem is how these will get attached anyway?
No way!
Think of a day in which the images can be characterized by looking into the "data" of the image.
If it becomes possible to tell whether it is picture of chair or that of a table!
It is a huge success.
BUT
Its a huge work.
One day!
(And the day is not so far, I read an article on New Scientist and came up with this thought)
For now the trick is to write the appropriate word to it.
For example you may search with the keyword "Nepali pop" in you tube to realize it.

"Automatic", is it?
I was trying to think of some algorithm and came across this feeling.
I mean you can see automatic stuffs because that was already programmed like that. This is the condition like that of developing familiarity. When we are familiar with something, it can be done without much concentration. For example you can talk and drive, you can recall elementary formulas and some of the mechanisms which has become so familiar with it and after practicing it many times.
Similar is the case with so called automatic thing. lets take another example: The CD/DVD drive can swallow the CD/DVD and if it was programmed to automatically read the content (like playing music or slide show) then it looks like automatic. but lets think of a situation when the CD was stuck in between!
if it was not conceived of that situation, then it is a huge problem!
The algorithm had not assumed such problem and thus if it was not designed to exit it, and continues to receive the swallow command it results in the damage. The nasty automatic stuff!
So, it seems to me that automated machines should have a learning branch. By virtue of which it can learn of/about the new situation which it never had come across. (I think there are already such things in the world.)
The problem is that once it("it" means something designed to be automatic) has been automated, it needs to learn and try to tackle the new situation. But the programmer can not think of millions of possibilities. So the possible set of problem is infinite and incomplete. If it can tackle the new situation then it will get innovation.
Am I talking about the nature of human innovation and Artificial Intelligence?
Human beings are already creating and contributing to many innovations!

How many PhD?
Just think, nearly (more than) 25 Nepali Physics students come to USA (and other countries) to pursue PhD degree in Physics and nearly the same number in Chemistry.
Though the trend is new, started about five/six years back.
The database is overwhelming, though not well documented. Mishra sir (CDP) wanted me to collect the database. He hoped that such database will help the policy makers to think about possible platform if they want the intellect to come back.
I had raised this issue in the plenary session in the Fourth national Conference organized by then RONAST.
It is a serious question. Suppose 10 Nepali people will start getting PhD and one or two think of returning to Nepal.
What s/he is forced to think is about the career.
Mishra Sir used to describe the present situation of Nepal as the situation of India in late 70's. Everybody was going aboard and he mentioned that India had a brust in developmental works after the trend to return was established.
How did India managed such issue?

Power of Public speaking.
I had found that the Kathmandu toast masters club was very nice place to go and learn/improve the English.
The main theme was
LOVE: Learn from other's Valuable experiences.
Kalpana DD was the inspiring figure in Kathmandu toast master. She so bright that she leaded the Nepali team in Special Olympics in 2003.

Decision Problem!
I can identify the new ones with the brightness and energy of/in their eyes and the faded-ness of the old ones.
By the way, its been one year for me too. I have celebrated my first year-day in the blog too.
After one year, I have come across many feelings. They touch me swiftly and just fade away. However, some of the feelings left everlasting impressions.
*****************************
Imagine a situation where your decision (binary : zero or one) affects the whole world. I have never come to(across) such situation, but would love to have one.
I have identified one of my problem.
Lets call it decision problem.
Suppose you have a man set to the button who can press it. After it is pressed, a missile is lunched (not to worry where it hits!)
He is asking you what do you want?
the answer is binary:
yes =1
no = 0
What will he do if you say 0.5?
Thatz bad!
Bad for everyone, since the result will be arbitary one.
For my case, I know that I can not please everyone. "If you please everyone, you please none."
And I speak of
0.5 +/- 0.5
outrageous!!!
How can I be evolved as such a ridiculous man in the world?

Being honest
But I can never claim that I am just a publisher.
It has to come through my finger-tips to www.
So, its kinda tricky.
I have always been befitted from the discussions.
Discussions with everyone.
The main ditch is that some of the writings are really creepy. One of the reason is that I write it on the fly.
No second readings (may be sometimes to add more errors!).

Many friends have commented on my silence to the academic sector.
I had arrived on the 23rd Aug. 2006. (So, today is my first anniversary in Albany !!!)
I appeared on the Comprehensive exam immediately after coming here.
I had no hope to pass and eventually I failed.
That was a huge shock.
The shock was good in the sense that it gave me a boost. It kept me motivated. The non zero marks was telling me that my mind is not vacuum. I had something there but had to be polarized in proper direction.
I passed it on January !!!
The time in between these two exam was terrible. I really had pretty hard time.
I used to spend more time in the Department than in my apartment. I used to feel alone. (I am still alone, but not to that extent.)
I passed!!!. and was awarded the "Outstanding performance Award".
Joining the group was one of the most hard decision.
I was really confused.
Prof. Caticha helped me to think by enumerating the possibilities. I am indebted for his valuable suggestions.
The second semester was OK.
I had the most hard course of my life in NMR. The course was on resonance but the home works lacked resonance. It was going everywhere. Indra sir was there to discuss the problem, but the main problem was that we had to start from scratch. Imagine starting from scratch on each set of homeworks which are not related to the regular class and keeping your interest alive!
I still remember keeping myself awake through nights, trying to complete the weekly homeworks.
It was really nice experience. I love challenges. (little bit, may be: JK :D )
The summer started with RA-ship. I am indebted to Prof. Knuth for supporting me through the summer. I was nominated into the local organizer of the MaxEnt2007. It was a great honor. I worked on some research topics and learned some ideas. The group is great. I was able to witness the development of Master's thesis. Summer was the nice experience.
(30 mins)
Its about now and coming semester.
The classes will start from next week. I will be teaching advanced lab and will be doing grading/tutoring. And three courses will keep be busy.
I wonder whether I would be able to post it as frequently as I am doing this month ...

Absent from the blog (not)
The summer is nearly over. My plan to go swimming has collapsed, why? I want to learn swimming.
The weather has become little bit chill. The hot-ness has gone.
I am/can't wait for the snow!
I am in the new address. Western Ave. bus 11 has started its service. Its more comfortable now.
I want to go to downtown Albany to take pictures. I want to take some beautiful pictures.
I am absent from the blog for today (not!)
11.59 (21Aug, 07)

OOps! I did it again ...
And more important: everything propagates afterwards. The schedule @10 goes to 10.30 or to 11. Or You have to eliminate s.t. outta schedule. I am not a schedule carrier, but it happens in general.
I was thinking that I will have to write for my blog but what should I write...
Suddenly, I came across an offline message by friend.
He had written everything on polite language (as much as possible between too close friends, we know what "polite" means) abusing with everything.
I was shocked!
I later realized that he had written it for some other friend, not me!
It happens.
Sending the envelops with wrong address and to the wrong people is human culture. And I am glad that it has been preserved through the history.
Once I had sent the scanned copy of recommendation Letter (written for me) to very very wrong address. I was like OOOOOOOOPS!
If you are in cyber-cafe in Kathmandu, and you left(forgot) the Email account without signing out, and moreover if the next person sitting to the same computer finds your account, and if s/he is naughty, imagine the result!
There is a saying : Spoken words, triggered bullet and (lets add) sent Emails are meant for no return!
Once you hit it, it is not yours!
I am sure that we should add one more item to the list of "Before 22"
"S/he will sent Email to a terribly wrong address at least once before 22!"
:)
True for everyone.

Song of the Day
I call it Song of the Day. Because it just stays around your mouth for the day.
Sometimes it happens that you will come across some thoughts, some beautiful ideas, and some interesting ideas. It is just like flash. It just comes and goes away. I witnessed this fact when I had written a fresh article, later to find that it had already been sketched in my old pages of diary. If you can catch it, its caught forever; if it is missed it is like a big fish!
So, these are two processes: one has some long term effect while the other has very short term effect.
Mind can catch the melody and songs while it gets away with the philosophical thoughts.
But I have a feeling that some beautiful thoughts are saved somewhere in our mind. It may come into our thoughts when you are indulged in something else. May be in rest-room, may be in the middle of telephone conversations, while standing inside the bus or while sleeping. If we suppose our state of mind to be taking a kind of random walk, I think it is like coming to some spot in the brain. (Just like finding a simple pole in complex plane.)
The question is how does the brain store the memory?
and how does the random thoughts occur?

Online Vs On-the-spot shopping
With the doubts in mind, I decided to buy my laptop online.
The risk was that if any problem occurs, then you have to mail it back. Mailing the whole package is little bit cumbersome.
But, on the other hand the facility return to the store is valid only for 15 days. So, after 15 days it is the same.
I ordered Dell Inspiron 6400. (2GB, 1.73Ghz, 80 GB, ...)
Because it was my first time, they called me for verification of my identity. Moreover, I had given credit card info of Indra Sir too: to pay it by two credit cards. They asked few questions. My credit card had only 500$ limit. I was cleared for the transaction.
The day following the shopping, I received a card with the credit limit of 4000$.
Anyway, the laptop was on the line.
Second was the Camera. It was on store, but the process was online one.
There was a case of delay when I had ordered the 1GB pendrive. When I filed the report, they promised me to give a new one. I emailed them with "thanks , I have received it" when I received it.
Online shopping seems OK.

Remembering the place ...
There was a background music from youtube, and I had just been searching for some terms in wikipedia.
I just came across the song of "swadesh" ... ye jo desh hei tera... by Udit.
It just reminded me my place, Nepal!.
I went to the place online. I could see the old house and its roof as the picture was taken from the satellite.
Hetauda was unclear in satellite picture but the Dhapakhel (Patan) was very clear!
It can not be just a coincidence that I was remembering the Nag-Daha ( A beautiful lake at Dhapakhel, Patan) at the camping site on Forked Lake last Saturday.
This evening I got an email from my neighborhood sister. She was asking me: Dai kahile Hetauda aaunu huncha? (Dear Bro, When are you coming to Hetauda?)
I could not cry!
She and his brother were small when I was there, they had enjoyed my teaching in the first phase of my career as a student of Science.
Is this a call from Nepal?
I can not come now ... I am in the battlefield.
I am OK, I miss you!

Google Map API
http://jgwebber.blogspot.com/2005/02/mapping-google.html
I could not resist not to "ctrl+v" it!
The always helpful Tech-Recipes has come up with an ingenious way to find latitude and longitude values for any location using Google Maps.
You'll first need to look up an address (duh), but this trick only works if the address is centered (it's centered by default). So, moving the map around will not make this work. When the address you want to find latitude and longitude for is dead center, copy and paste this code into your browser bar:
javascript:void(prompt('',gApplication.getMap().getCenter()));

Random Thought(s)!
SPAM Counts!
I came to know that most of the spams are sent on Tuesday and Wednesday.
There were 35 spams and 16 mails in my gmail account in three days:Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
While I have received 16 "good" Emails in the inbox and 72 spams in Monday(less) and Tuesday.
Spam filter is working good!
As I am updating this piece, the spam counts are increasing.
Comments!
I had been expecting comments from the visitors, but I came across the fact that not too many visitors are interested to leave comments. I was putting myself to other blogs in wordpress and blogspot and found that I will prefer to read and pass by, but will not leave the comments. Because writing comments requires asking questions to myself about what I have understood and what should be written. Sometimes the articles are just a random collections of words. So, I don't mind in having the no-comments.
Well, these are random thoughts, Just generated while I sat and started to write. I am glad that I have some materials to keep posting. Some day, I will recollect these random thoughts to make up something good. This is my promise. When will that day come?

Wireless Camping!
As promised, the camping had "all natural" set ups: no electricity. But some people managed to bring the i-pod, there is no escape from the technology!
Have you seen "The Gods must be crazy"?
I got a piece of wire on the camping site, strong and very useful but I threw it out. The wire has been the reason of all troubles: at least, partly. I must say this was the wireless Camping. No wires means no electricity and no electronics!. I remembered my Nag-Daha, Dhapakhel. You can remember your village back in Nepal without the wires, the tents as the home (to make it more interesting, imagine it to be made up of bushes and sticks; just like the bush-man's one).
The most amazing moment was being at the "center" of the Lake in the evening: Quite and Calm. The other amazing moment was the small "krik krik" crackling sounds of the fire woods and the buzz of people in the background.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOh, this makes me miss the place.
Thanks Mark (and he misses Ginny a lot, she is in China)
Back to life. Your trouble is others patent!
I had watched the google-presentation on you tube about this theme.
Just use your trouble to create ideas.
Trust me, I am posting through the wireless available in my room (by chance).
I can't go to jungle! These all are captured in sweet memories and in youtube and picassa web album. I think the hang-over will roll back in my blog again and again.

Applying to US Universities
In general:
"I am glad that you are interested to getting the higher degree. It worths bearing some pain while trying to get admitted in a US University. There is a problem: internet is a large resource. Large informations just floods in. The overwhelming sources and the level of knowledge gathered becomes entangled with each other. The best problem is keep track of what you are doing while searching through the websites, and to learn how to get through the non-informed state to informed state. "
Important: Send the documents to the Department, unless otherwise they are really strict about it. It will save the application fee to be paid to the admission office. Some of them simply will not waive the application fees while some of them do.
I think the best resources are:
http://www.gradschools.com/listings/menus/physics_menu.html
http://www.phds.org/graduate-school/ (as resource)
The List of Nepali Physicists from Google Group can be helpful to see who went where.
Googling with the key-word:
"department of Physics state university"
gives some best schools.
(Take it as a joke, but take it):
You are certainly not going to the top one!.
So, Go to third page of the list and make a list of school (University), Address, requirements, application deadlines , etc. etc...
(Make an Excel spread sheet)
and
update it regularly.
I know it looks awkward , but it pays!
I think this is the best way to get started.
The most important thing to keep in mind is that we have no time to think, we just want the things to get done. We really need to work on it to get something. Specially when the competition is tough and chances are that You may end up getting "rejection" letters.
I think, up to 10 rejection letters will teach some lessons and If you don't mind, this is the real way.
(That was a real Joke)
BEST OF LUCK.
I will keep posting.

Going for Camping at Forked Lake Campsite Lane, Long Lake, NY 12847
Its a jungle.
I am going for complete jungle trip.
I hope that it will be a great experience.
no mobile phone, no computers, no internet !!!
Usually, how many hours do we spent online?
For my case, I leave my laptop "open" after reaching the office at University. And importantly, I love to stay at my office than to stay at my room. So, due to the wireless, my laptop remains connected to the internet. Thats the reason why I have left the signature "sleeping on the keyboard" on my google talk messenger. Some people thought that I was ignoring them, because they saw me online and hit some words for me to get no response [and there is no invisible button like in yahoo messenger ;)].
I can not imagine the pleasure of being there near the beautiful lake and should thank the horizons group for organizing such trip: Specially to Mark and Ginny and all the other nice people working together.

For the records, because no one will remember your term in Nepal Physical Society (and some may think that you deceived it)!
I have made the nepal physical society website on google page.
nps.nepal.googlepages.com/nepalphysicalsociety
while the enet server holds only the frame page.which is less than 1kb.
So, the site is pretty fast (faster than previous case, in which everything was on slow server).
I have also put the "edit" link at the bottom-right of the page for easy access to edit the page.
Well, I hope this description will suffice to edit the pages for updates.
Previously, I had encountered terrible problems while trying to update the nps website (nps.org.np). The ftp did not work and the control panel they had provided did not work (timed out).
I had requested (lets not take the name) peoples there but got no response. At that time Murari jee (enet) was also out of office and I could not find anyone from the enet office to help me.
Finally, Amit could establish the contact with Murari jee (after he was back to enet (?)).
He helped me to update the content and at the last time to update the frame page.
GREAT!
(it is not so great story for others, but imagine a situation where you have to maintain the website, you are aboard, others are not available to update the page and you are watching the same material on the website for more than 9months. And most terribly all your efforts are gone to nothing, no emails are responded by the peoples to work on the website. I hate to say it but i had started to question the integrity and respectfulness of someone who I adored alot!)
I am glad that my term is finally over.
I have tried to do some little things, (if not great work).
For record:
I have created the google group for nepal physical society (it has 101 members to date).( http://groups.google.com/group/nps_nepal)
I claim that the website listing on APS (http://www.aps.org/membership/reciprocal/societies.cfm ) website and AAPPS (http://www.aapps.org/societies.html) is my contribution (by the way, I had emailed them and it has put a weblink to nps, I am excited) .
Also, the database at: http://www.physnet.de/PhysNet/societies.html#Asia
and
http://www.physnet.de/PhysNet/asia.html#Nepal
were updated on my request.
I have requested :
http://www.nepalhomepage.com/dir/academia/
but they are not responding, I don't know why!
I hope the to get the link at:
http://www.cospa.ntu.edu.tw/aapps/link.htm
pretty soon.

Saturday Aug. 4, 2007:
Went to Prof. Kimball's Picnic. (Prof. Kevin Knuth and Emily Knuth gave me a ride, thank you very much!!!)
Enjoyed it!!!
Sailing, Eating and Enjoying the beauty of lake Saratoga.
Thank you Prof. Kimball!!!
Sunday Aug. 5, 2007:
Went to Walmart to buy a vacuum cleaner (it is not so powerful, so kinda donot like it, but hate to go for return) and anti sunscreen lotion, and a sleeping bag.
Next week I am going to camping.
This is not a blog writing! On my nested sampling I got some offline comments from friends that I may have enough time to write such a long article!, it took me time if I sum up all fragments: it had taken nearly 2 hrs.)
The problem is that in these two days I took a little off for rest. No study and no tension means no thoughts to write. So, Nothing to write.
Meanwhile I have started a page on google group of Nepal Physical Society in which people can update their progress. Let's see how far it goes.
It is the time of Comprehensive preparations, so, I can see my college friends cramming for it.
Good luck friends!

Nested Sampling (Skilling)
The basic idea is that in order to reach to the ultimate region of interest one needs to contract the search space into itself. Assuming no loss in generality and assuming the risk of contracting the region of interest, one proceeds to nest the sampling space. The guiding philosophy is that "nature abhors gradient".
What is nice about this algorithm is the fact that we get Posterior distribution and the evidence as the by product of each other.
The evidence indicates the strength of the model and the posterior depicts the learning pattern.

Thought for the day
" Basket case science, basket case society"
The utter failure of science in Nepal is built into our own system
" It is quite obvious that there is not any significant development in science in Nepal. Many people maintain that the government and politicians are fully or mainly responsible for this quandary, as for every other. But the author digs deeper to discover the underlying causes. He argues that the scientific failure happened 'through' the politicians, not 'by' them. "

adsense and cluster map
Adsense: I have decided that if I get 100 dollars (ever), I will donate it to Nepal Mali Samaj. It is a social group trying to 'uplift' the exposures of Mali community (to which I belong). I had served as an active volunteer to it. I really enjoyed to do so. Peoples were really nice and inspiring in the commitee.
Actually, I have seen it evolve from the very beginning (though was not so much involved in the very beginning). I like their program of supporting students from poor background and had donated some amount (lets not get too personal). One of the reason why I got involved too much on it is because of my Uncle: शंख नारायण माली . He was more than dedicated. The president तीर्थ Dai was as much devoted to develop it. As a whole it was a team.
But if anyone decides me to help on this mission by clicking on the ads........ repeatedly, its going to kill my mission!
Google adsense can sense why and how many times users do click on the ad. For example if I request to somebody to click on the ad the whole day, I will be rich for no reason. That is the reason why one of my friend had got his adsense blocked!!! she publishized the technique to her sister in nepal! She thought she helped.
Cluster map: It shows from which location is my blog: ajabgajab.blogspot.com
being viewed. Obviously, it has the biggest of all at NewYork! Could it detect the location, it would have been my table and my laptop!
http://clustrmaps.com/
I know (and hope) there are many alternatives too!

Happy Birth DAy mtv
I think its presence has inspired a generation or a generation inspired its launch. In anyway, it is(/WAS) a part of (american) life.
I was able to get chance to see some clips of MTV when it was summer vacation of 95 (highschool). I think that was my first encounter with it. I liked the style at that time. So, after the morning show of Nepal Television, I used to rotate the channel gear to search for MTV. It was not cable version so was very unclear (with many white noise) . I remember as it became more sunny it used to be more dimmer to my B/W TV.
